A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
