A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
